Alexis de Tocqueville, a social historian and political scientist, came to the United States from France in 1893 to study democracy. He was impressed by the American spirit of volunteerism.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society of United Way of America nationally recognizes individuals who demonstrate commitment through a significant contribution of $10,000 or more to their local United Way.
